FAQs

Q LARGE POWER TRANSFORMERS UP TO 765KV

Large Power Transformers within the SGB-SMIT Group are manufactured in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. A very modern production facility with no limitations in size and weight, where the transformers can be shipped to the port of Rotterdam within 1 day. The unique single-winding-clamping-construction is used for the large power transformers, contributing to the very high quality standard of our transformers.

Whilst in the 21st century electronic components are in general becoming increasingly small and compact, at Royal SMIT Transformers B.V.. in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, larger and heavier power transformers are being developed. However, there is an important parallel: in both situations technicians are constantly pushing the boundaries to the limit.

The development of electricity grids worldwide towards ever-larger generating units requires transformers that have higher voltages and higher capacities. Amongst other things, the development of transformers is limited by their exceptional dimensions and weight, because this large electro technical component has to be transported to its destination in one piece. In the nearly one hundred year old history of Royal SMIT Transformers B.V., the transformer is still based on the same principle. However, the production location of Smit in Nijmegen was transformed several times to stay ahead of this development.

And this was successfully achieved! In 2008, the company took another giant step forward by introducing air cushion transportation for transformers in final assembly and testbay, resulting in a time decrease for each transformer movement by approximately 8 hours.

The Lean Manufacturing principles are propagated and employees are trained and encouraged to strive for continuous improvement. The purpose of this is to achieve a shorter throughput time, without negative effect to the quality level. An important motivating factor is having a well filled orderbook in hand.

Q MEDIUM POWER TRANSFORMERS

There is hardly a problem we have not yet solved, hardly a design that we have not already built for many years of experience in the area of power transformers makes you variable, create flexibility and gives you a high degree of problem-solving ability. Know-how as standard in all productions sites in Germany, Malaysia and the USA.

Our Experience is to your advantage
Our customers appreciate our high degree of expertise and the 100% reliability of our transformers. A guarantee of this is the continually increased knowledge over many years in the construction and development of power transformers. This is why we are equipped to deal with virtually every customer’s wish:

Our power transformers are manufactured with a rated capacity of between 5 and 100 MVA and for service voltages of up to 245 kV.
To adapt the voltage, it is possible to provide on-load tap changers for max. 22 % tapping range for adjustment in up to 27 steps under load, or off-load tap changers for example for 5 % tapping range for adjustment off circuit.
Often used connection groups include YNd5, YNd11 or Ynyn0, YNyn6 with and without delta stabilising windings.
